The family company Sureerath Prawns is one of the biggest black tiger prawn producers inThailand. Prayoon Hongrath, the owner and manager of the company, has made constant improvements to farming technology and steadfastly optimised farming processes. His company is considered to be one of the most successful and innovative in the country. At the beginning of 2006 Prayoon and his son Kritsada began a process of converting the whole of production with its nearly 150 ponds to organic farming.

'GTZ URGES THAILAND TO PRODUCE ORGANIC PRAWNS'

The German Technical Cooperation discloses that the demand for organic food in European countries has gradually increased by 10 to 20% annually. The cooperation is urging Thai farmers to breed organic prawns to add value to the product, as well as preserve the environment. The Sureerath Organic Prawns farm is Thailand's first organic shrimp farm to receive the Naturland certificate, which is widely known and accepted in European countries.
